Weekly vs monthly billing on Whop: what top whops charge, and the failed-payment math nobody shows you
20 large whops bill weekly, every two weeks or even every two days. Here is what they charge, why weekly plans convert better, and the arithmetic of failed renewals on short cycles — with the numbers you need to decide for your own whop.
Most SaaS advice says "bill annually". Most of the biggest whops do the opposite: they bill weekly. Sports picks, options alerts, cook groups, ecommerce mentorships — the highest-revenue communities on Whop have moved to cycles of seven days or less, and they keep them because they work. This article lists who does it, why it converts, and the cost it carries: on a weekly plan, failed renewals happen four to five times as often, and each one is a member you can lose in five days.

Why weekly converts better
A $35/week plan and a $150/month plan cost about the same per year. They do not sell the same. The weekly price is under the "I'll just try it" threshold for far more people, the exit feels free ("I can cancel Sunday"), and in seasonal niches — NFL, NBA playoffs, earnings season — a member who would never commit to a month will pay for the week that matters. Whops that offer both usually report the weekly plan as the main entry point and the monthly or annual as the upgrade once the member has seen value.
The same logic applies to trials: a $0 or $1 first week is a weekly plan with a discount on the first charge, and it produces the same renewal behaviour afterwards.
The failed-payment math
Every renewal is a card charge, and a share of card charges fail: expired cards, insufficient funds, bank declines on "unusual" merchants. Across paid communities, 3–8% of renewal attempts fail in a normal month — more on cards issued outside the US, and more on weekly cycles, because a card that expired on the 1st fails every attempt until it is replaced.
- Monthly plan, 1,000 members, 4% failure: 40 failed renewals a month.
- Weekly plan, 1,000 members, 4% failure: 4,330 attempts a month → 173 failed renewals a month.
- Two-day cycle, 600 members: 9,000 attempts a month → 360 failed renewals a month.
What happens next is the same on every cycle: Whop emails the member and retries the card for five days, then cancels the membership. Email open rates on those retries are low, and on a weekly plan the member has often already been charged for the next week by the time they notice. Without a direct message, a large share of those 173 members simply disappear — not because they chose to leave.
At $35/week, 173 failed renewals is about $6,000 of billing at risk every month on a 1,000-member whop. Recovering 35% of it, which is what a same-day DM plus two follow-ups typically gets, is $2,100 a month back. On monthly billing the same whop has 40 failures and $1,400 at risk; the weekly whop has more upside precisely because it has more failures.
What to do if you bill weekly
- Message the member the minute the charge fails, from your own support chat, in your voice, with the one-click link to update the card. Not the next morning: on a weekly cycle, the next morning is a fifth of the period gone.
- Follow up twice — at 48 hours and at day 5, before Whop's final retry. Stop the moment they pay.
- Offer the monthly or annual plan in the second message. A member who fixes a card while thinking about the product is the best moment to upgrade the cycle.
- Count what came back. Recovered revenue is a line on your dashboard or it does not exist. Templates and the full sequence: how to recover failed payments on Whop.
Retainer runs that sequence automatically inside your whop: it reads the failed-payment event the minute Whop raises it, DMs the member from your support chat, follows up twice, stops when they pay, and counts only the revenue that actually returned. Free plan for the first 20 DMs a month; the Recover plan is $0/mo and 20% of what comes back, so on a weekly whop it pays for itself on the first week.
